The armed man who allegedly opened fire on an unarmed truck driver in Austin on Friday night has been identified.
According to the Austin Police Department, officers were called to a home in the 100 block of Southwest 16th Street around 8:30 p.m. on Friday after the man reported seeing an armed man.
The officer was not injured.
According a statement released by the Austin police department, the armed man was identified as a 23-year-old man.
He was later identified as Antonio R. Johnson.
Johnson told police he was acting in self-defense when he opened fire, but the officers had no reason to believe that Johnson was threatening any officers or anyone else.
Johnson’s attorney, Scott Baugh, said he was shocked by the police department’s decision to release Johnson’s name, and expressed disappointment with the department for not releasing a description of Johnson.
“I’m surprised by this,” he said.
“I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Police said Johnson’s vehicle, a Chevrolet Cruze, was traveling north on Southwest 16h Street when he fired one shot at the truck, striking the passenger in the passenger seat.
Johnson was taken into custody without incident.
