The New Zealand Rugby League is set to take to the field for its first ever exhibition match against South Sydney on Sunday night, and the match will be the biggest sporting event in the country’s history.
The NRL is set for a new season with four teams, with the club side coming into the league with the strongest set of talent, having made the finals of the A-League last year.
However, a group of players are set to be overlooked as the competition returns to the capital following the winter break, and will be joined by a select group of former NRL stars and stars from other national and international rugby league teams.
The match is set in the shadow of the city’s iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge, where rugby league has been played for many decades, and is likely to draw crowds of at least 70,000, and possibly more.
The league has also signed a deal with a US television network to broadcast a special on the game, in which former stars from the NRL and NFL will discuss their careers, including their careers in the NRL, and how they went from being a rugby league player to a superstar in the sport.
The competition’s new logo will be unveiled on Sunday afternoon.
The game is set with the stars of the NRL in their prime, with former stars like Brett Morris, Scott Gumbleton and Jason Taumalolo, former NRL players like Robbie Farah and Brett Stewart and former NRL club captain Wayne Bennett, among others, also in attendance.
New Zealand Rugby Union head coach Mike Tolkin has been on the sidelines since December, and his future remains uncertain.
But the NRL is in good hands, with Tolkin having been given the opportunity to step into the role and make an impact in his first season.
“I think the league’s been great for the game,” Tolkin said.
“The players have really stepped up, and they’ve done a really good job and I’m excited about it.”
The match will air live on the ABC TV channel on Sunday, with NRL.com.au reporting the match is expected to be streamed on its Facebook page.
