Radio broadcaster Cesare Begi has confirmed that midfielder Leonardo Duret will feature in Italy’s squad for next week’s World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Panama.
Duret has been linked with a move to Italy’s Serie A following a strong start to the campaign.
The 27-year-old has been in sensational form this season, scoring eight goals and assisting seven others.
In the Italian top flight, Durel is second in the league with a tally of 16 goals, one behind top scorer Alessandro Florenzi, while his teammates have scored seven times and assisted six.
According to Begi, Dury, who has scored three goals in five games, has the “right” qualities to become a regular starter for the national side, and the Italian press is speculating that he could be the one to step up to the plate in Argentina.
Begi also confirmed that the 27-time Ballon d’Or winner Mario Balotelli will feature on the international team.
“Balotelli is on the World Cup squad and is a very good player,” Begi said.
A recent injury to the striker, who missed last month’s games against the United States and Argentina due to a knee problem, has seen him miss the last three matches.
It remains to be seen if Balotelli will be available for the Argentina-Panama game, but Begi said he was confident that Balotella would feature in the squad.
Italian fans will be hoping for another fantastic performance from their team, as the country are in the midst of a poor run of form and have failed to score in six matches, all losses to opponents who finished in the bottom half of the table.
Balotellini is currently in the second year of a new three-year deal that was confirmed in January.
As he approaches the end of his contract, it remains to happen whether he will remain in the side or return to Juventus.
Last month, Begi revealed that Juventus would have to pay a transfer fee to sign Balotello, but the Italian side decided against the move due to the club’s financial situation.
On the other hand, the Bianconeri have been linked to a move for Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, with Italian media reporting the Catalan side are keen to sign the Brazilian, who scored 19 goals in 29 appearances for the Etihad Stadium side last season.
With Begi’s comments, the speculation that a deal could be completed to bring Balotalla to Juventus is becoming less likely.
